Description

The primary function of this position is to provide administrative respiratory therapy expertise in support of research, teaching and clinic activities conducted in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Examples of Duties

Research 5%
1. Assist in the development and implementation of research projects involving respiratory function testing.
2. Perform pulmonary function on patients enrolled in research projects. Record data and assist in the evaluation of findings in accordance with the study protocols.
3. train other research personnel and clinical staff to perform new techniques as necessary.
4. Assist in the development and monitoring of grant budgets.
Service 80%
1. Establishes, implements, evaluates, and enforces safety and infection control regulations and procedures for the pulmonary function lab.
2. Maintain knowledge and certifications in Respiratory Therapy, Pulmonary Function and Sleep Laboratory procedures.
3. Perform pulmonary function tests and cardiopulmonary exercise tests.
4. Monitor quality and implement procedural changes that relate to the accurate, safe and efficient completion of procedures performed.
5. Supervise routine maintenance and repair of pulmonary clinic equipment.
6. Monitor the reliability and validity of results of pulmonary function studies and take corrective action where needed.
7. Oversee proper maintenance of records and procedure manuals related to pulmonary function in the clinic.

8. Evaluate and make recommendations regarding clinic equipment needs.
9. Assist with patient recruitment and planning of annual Pulmonary Patient Days.
10. Perform Spirometry in ALS clinic.
11. Assist with Spirometry and Oximetry in pulmonary clinic.
Teaching 5%
1. Observes Certified Medical Assistants in performance of spirometry to evaluate efficiency, skill, and abilities for use in initiating personnel actions
2. Teach medical students, residents, fellows, staff and patients on pulmonary function and CPET testing as directed by the division chief.
3. Participate in continuing education programs on pulmonary laboratory procedures.
4. Provide education to patients, families and the general public regarding pulmonary function and sleep disorders.
Administrative 10%
1. Plans scope and objectives; organizes and directs activities in the respiratory therapy department according to the health care facility's policies, standard practices of the profession, and state and federal laws.
2. Initiates, develops, reviews, updates, interprets, and carries out rules and regulations pertaining to administrative and professional policies of the Internal Medicine department and PFT lab policies and procedures.
3. Plans most efficient use of personnel, space, and equipment to afford efficient treatment and provides continuity of care for patients receiving respiratory care.
4. Coordinates pulmonary function lab operation with chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine to ensure prompt, efficient, and complete patient care
5. Investigates and studies trends and developments in pulmonary function testing practices and techniques; contributes to the development of PFT lab operational manuals, outlining methods, procedures, and techniques and incorporate advances in the field.
6. Establishes reporting procedures and types of records to be maintained to ensure a standard of care required by the health care facility and accreditation commission: prepares statistical data as necessary; and maintains adequate records and audits.
7. Prepares budget estimates of personnel, supplies, and equipment; and prepares narrative and statistical reports of activities and expenditures.
8. Supervises inventory control, maintenance, and repair of PFT lab equipment; suggests and assists in evaluation of new equipment; authorizes purchase of supplies and equipment.
9. Ensures that reports, evaluations, and projects are accurate and completed.
10. Keeps current on latest developments by attending professional lectures, local and regional seminars, and equipment showings.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) approved School for Respiratory Care and licensed in the State of Illinois.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a health related science and four (4) years (48 months) of work experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
