Description

The incumbent will function as a faculty member in the Division of Adult Psychiatry where the incumbent will provide services to general psychiatric populations on an inpatient or outpatient basis as needed for residency training needs. The incumbent will serve as the General Psychiatry Residency Director and the Internal Medicine Psychiatry Residency Director. The incumbent will be responsible for active participation in the development and delivery of instructional activities to students, residents, and allied health professionals and for service and research functions related to specialty interest and expertise.

Examples of Duties

25% Teaching
* Provide oversight and supervision of resident clinical experiences to ensure appropriate quality of clinical education.
* Carry out delegated responsibilities concerning the instruction of medical students and residents in the discipline of psychiatry. This includes participation in and direction of formal rounds, conferences, and seminars: leadership and instruction during formal and informal ward rounds.
* Participate in seminar series for residents.
* Teach and train psychiatric residents on their inpatient and outpatient clinical rotation through the year.
* Will mentor senior residents as needed.
* Will mentor medical students in clerkship at SIU School of Medicine.
* Participate in Grand Rounds and other post-graduate educational activities.
* Serve as Residency Director for Psychiatry and Internal Medicine Psychiatry. Ensure compliance with all ACGME educational standards.
* Provide ongoing general residency curriculum oversight and development.
* Assess needs, define priorities, and propose educational goals on short and long range basis as they relate to the residency programs. Collaborate with departmental leadership to create metrics to track progress towards those goals.
* Coordinate off-site residency experiences.
* Coordinate with Internal Medicine for Medicine Psychiatry residency schedules and educational experiences.
50% Clinical Service
* Maintain professional practice in accordance with SIU Healthcare policy.
* Serve on inpatient, consultation liaison service or outpatient services as needed for residency training needs.
* Participate in call schedule and other routine faculty coverage duties of inpatient units on weekends and holidays.
15% Administration
* Serve as Residency Director for Psychiatry. Recommend policies and procedures. Provide continuous auditing and monitoring of quality control procedures for the program. Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, and materials selection. Assure compliance with all ACGME and institutional standards and reporting.
* Allocation of residency budget.
* Oversight of residency coordinator and her assignments.
* Coordinate residency recruitment.
* Perform administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Chair of Psychiatry and attend administrative school and department meetings as assigned by the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry.
Research 10%
* Will oversee resident research activities to assure all residents are involved in a research project and maintain satisfactory progress.
* Will maintain up-to-date medical and psychiatric knowledge in the area of specialty.
* Will publish one (1) research paper in peer-reviewed journal every three (3) years (education research preferred).
* Maintain certification per Springfield Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (SCRIHS).
* Will be involved with at least one (1) SCRIHS approved study at all times.

Qualifications

  1. Must have an MD or DO degree
  2. Must have completed four years of approved residency program in psychiatry and be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and must maintain board certifications
  3. Must have at least three (3) years of experience in academic psychiatry
  4. Must be trained and eligible or willing to be trained to provide ECT services
  5. Must be trained or willing to be trained in TMS
  6. Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Illinois
  7. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
